The Extremaduran matador walked out through the Puerta Grande after cutting two ears from an outstanding Núñez del Cuvillo bull at Las Ventas.

The 2026 San Isidro Fair has already delivered its first major triumph. Alejandro Talavante once again set Las Ventas alight by securing another Puerta Grande in Madrid thanks to a performance of remarkable quality against an exceptional bull from Núñez del Cuvillo, which was awarded the honour of a vuelta al ruedo.

With the “sold out” signs displayed around the arena and a vibrant atmosphere filling the stands, the Extremaduran matador found the perfect partner in the fourth bull of the afternoon. The bull, named “Ganador”, showed extraordinary class, rhythm and quality on the muleta, allowing Talavante to produce one of the standout performances of the fair so far.

From the very beginning, Talavante understood the bull perfectly and gradually built a faena that grew in intensity and emotion. His work with the left hand produced the most memorable moments, drawing deep and flowing natural passes that had the Madrid crowd roaring with approval. The connection between matador and spectators became absolute.

He also produced elegant and expressive work on the right side, including several beautifully executed changes of hand. After a well-placed sword thrust, the crowd’s petition was overwhelming and the president awarded two ears, while the bull received a standing ovation and a vuelta al ruedo during the drag around the ring.

With this latest success, Talavante secured the seventh Puerta Grande of his career at Las Ventas, confirming once again his special relationship with Madrid and repeating the impact he achieved during last year’s San Isidro Fair.

His first bull, however, offered very limited possibilities and faded quickly, giving the matador little chance to shine.

Juan Ortega showed flashes of his elegant and classical style with the fifth bull, arguably the second most interesting animal of the corrida. The Sevillian began with some refined right-handed series full of composure and rhythm, but the faena gradually lost momentum and never fully connected with the demanding Madrid audience. Once again, the sword prevented any possibility of a trophy.

Meanwhile, Tristán Barroso confirmed his alternativa in one of the most important afternoons of his young career. The newcomer displayed determination and commitment throughout the corrida, although he was unable to fully round off either performance. Problems with the sword significantly reduced his chances of success and he was met with silence after both bulls.

The Núñez del Cuvillo corrida produced mixed results overall in terms of presentation and behaviour, although the fourth bull will remain the unforgettable highlight of the afternoon. San Isidro therefore began with one of those memorable performances that once again underline Madrid’s status as the ultimate stage for bullfighting greatness.
