The Saltillo bullfight that closed out April at Las Ventas left a lasting impression of truth and intensity with the fifth bull, which Luis Gerpe faced with determination and grit, earning a well-deserved lap of honour. Javier Castaño, currently on his retirement tour, was honoured after the paseíllo but found little opportunity in the ring. Cristóbal Reyes, confirming his alternativa, showed willing attitude but could not round off the evening with triumph.
With just over 10,000 seats occupied on a windy afternoon that once again challenged the toreros, the Saltillo bulls offered moments of real interest—and one clear standout: Luis Gerpe. The Madrid-born matador won over the crowd with the fifth bull, a fiery and brave specimen that demanded precision, composure, and resolve. After taking three strong varas, the bull maintained its energy and drive into the final act. Gerpe attempted to work the animal in tight, fluid series without rough handling, but the bull was no pushover. In one moment of high exposure, it caught him square in the chest and tossed him violently—but, thankfully, without serious injury. Undeterred, Gerpe returned to the fight and drew two convincing series with the right hand, getting the most out of a bull that made no concessions. He finished with a solid sword thrust, and although the petition for an ear wasn’t granted, he was rewarded with a warm lap of honour. His performance with his first bull had shown promise but didn’t quite resonate with the audience.
Javier Castaño, now in his final season, was invited to salute from the centre of the ring after the opening procession in tribute to his career. His first opponent, a sluggish bull lacking transmission, left him little room to shine—though he remained composed and brave. His second bull, the fourth of the afternoon, was rougher and even less cooperative. Castaño did his best but was visibly injured, sustaining an adductor muscle strain in his right thigh and having to retreat to the infirmary after his efforts. His courage earned him respect, though not applause.
Cristóbal Reyes, from Seville, approached the day of his alternativa confirmation with attitude and presence. He stayed true to his elegant style, managing to land a few tasteful natural passes with the sixth bull—a very serious and demanding animal. However, the faena never fully came together, and wayward sword work cost him any reward. His first bull, while more manageable, lacked drive. Reyes showed calm and intent but never really connected with the crowd. Both performances faded with the failure of the sword.
True to their reputation, the Saltillo bulls didn’t offer anything freely and demanded total honesty. Only Luis Gerpe truly connected with the Madrid crowd, leaving the afternoon with the mark of a matador ready to face whatever the ring brings.

Saltillo bulls, well-presented, serious in build, and demanding in behaviour. The fifth stood out for its spirit and mobility.
White and gold: silence, silence
Emerald green and gold: silence, lap of honour.
Ochre and gold, confirming his alternativa: silence, silence
